Gone are the days of needing to purchase (and clean!) metal piping tips to achieve certain textures like leaves or flower petals. With a simple cut in a tipless piping bag, you can achieve both leaves…

… and flower petals! Now that’s some versatility I can get behind 😉

How to Pipe Leaves with a Tipless Piping Bag
Step 1: Position the bag so the seam is on one side and the fold is on the other, then flatten the tip with your fingers for better control.

Step 2: Using scissors, cut a sharp/steep V shape. It’s important that the V not be too “fat”–the fatter/wider the V, the thicker your leaves will be. A sharper V better mimics the metal leaf piping tip.

Step 3: Turn the bag 90 degrees so that the fold is now on the top (and the seam on the bottom). Fluff the tip out–instead of a V cutout in step 2, it will now look like the end of a quill/arrow.

Step 4: To pipe the leaf, use a back and forth motion to create the ripples of the leaf (back and forth motion–like you are cutting a loaf of bread).

Pro Tip: Practice piping on parchment paper first to perfect your technique before working directly on your cookie.

To have the most success piping your leaves or flower petals, make sure that you’re using a medium peak piping consistency of royal icing. Check out this post for all things consistency!
